We Were Exploding Anyway, the fouth album by 65daysofstatic, was released a fare time ago this year and is one I kind of ignored. Having originally been quite into the bands sound I got a little tired of it after a while leaving my hopes for the new album relatively negative (I’m not sure you can have negative hopes, does that work?). I listened to the new album on release and dismissed it as being cheesy.
I was wrong.
All they did was change or evolve or however you put it by incorporating more synths and less glitches, and also working at a calmer pace. The first half hour of the album is good. It’s when you get to the last two tracks, ‘Debutante’ and ‘Tiger Girl’, that it gets great. There is a certain Fuck Buttons thing going on. Not in the sound, it’s certainly not as dark or distorted, but in the structures. ‘Debutante’ is the gentle and atmospheric preparation to the albums climax. One track merges into the next and only the *thud thud thud* lets you know about the change. The long rise of ‘Tiger Girl’ collects more sounds as it goes along until it can’t handle any more and shifts into an ambient decline.
